Reflection: Checks for Understanding Narrative Retelling: Teach Me How to Retell - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

I’ve included a picture of a completed student Narrative Retelling Guide so that you can see what the end result may look like with your students. The grading scale we use in third grade in my district is B for Beginning understanding of concept, D for Developing within grade level, and S for Secure understanding of concept. The picture shows a student that has a Secure understanding of Retelling and completed the Guide correctly. For students that were not Secure, I would use the time during Guided Practice to meet with them, either individually or in a small group. I would have them review my feedback and then give them support to make changes and re-check for understanding. I have copies of these and all other Strategy Guides organized in a file crate so I can have them on hand to use with these students or any students another time to reinforce the strategy throughout the year.
