Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Main Idea and Key Details 3 - Section 3: Assessment


Even though my informal assessment showed students were able to identify key details in connection with the main idea of a text, the key is getting them to do it every time. They are able to get the correct answer when they take the time to read, highlight, or complete a graphic organizer. The challenge is getting them to do it independently. During formal assessments, they read and answer without going through the steps of highlighting or underlining key details which results in low test scores. I understand that it is time-consuming and takes a great deal of discipline for eight- and nine-year-olds, but it is a habit they must develop until they are able to do it without those supports.
