Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Reading Analysis: Understanding Theme and Character in Crane's "The Open-Boat" - Section 2: Time To Read: "The Open-Boat"

 

Students began developing a foundation through today's reading and responses to the study guide. As I circulated the room, a few students would ask for clarification, and I found they needed to be able to draw distinction between the men on the boat as Crane's distinctions and deliberately subtle. In the enactment video above, the student asked how the men ended up in the boat to start, which provided a "teachable moment" for the whole class. I took the opportunity to remind the class to always read the background material as well as the assigned work, as it often provides needed clarification.

Big Idea: Alone, in a boat, four men prove themselves in the face of the intimidating power of the sea; alone, in class, each student proves himself or herself in the face of independent reading.
