There is no rule that says teachers have to make poetry a burden to students, but that's what we do when we relegate it to big, bulky textbooks. We need to find ways to make poetry accessible to students while giving them ownership of their learning. That's what line tossing does. Think about how many times a student reads a line when line tossing. Consider the ways the student writes about the lines. Ponder the ways students perform the lines. All of these result in students owning their learning and learning their poems.
