Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Word Problems with 3 Addends Part II - Section 2: Whole Group Interaction


You can see in the video that my students selected numbers to add that equaled 10 and thank goodness that was their choice. Next year, when I teach this lesson I will begin by reminding my students about the short cuts we have learned and focused on when adding. I have covered many strategies that build fluency in adding; adding zero, doubles facts, commutative property of addition, adding one, etc. I need to refresh their memory that here is a perfect opportunity to use these strategies and make those connections.

Objective: SWBAT join a set of 3 numbers through addition.

Big Idea: My students have worked on joining 3 addends using drawings, objects, and equations. This lesson will supply concentrated practice on solving 3 addend equations with sums less than or equal to 20.
