Reflection: Relevance Reading Tables: What Breakfast Food Is Your Favorite? - Section 1: Introduction/Hook

 

Instead of just presenting a table and saying "this tool helps us to organize numbers easily"  having students grapple with their own data and the see how that data is easy to read in a table helps them to conceptualize the relevance of using a table.  I hope that my students are able to walk away from this lesson understanding not only how to read a table but also why we use tables. MP5 asks students to use appropriate tools strategically.  In this lesson, students are introduced not just to what a table is but also to why and how we use tables.  Hopefully this conceptual understanding will allow them to use tables strategically in second grade and beyond.
