## Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Multiply a Whole Number by a Decimal - Section 2: Skill Building/Exploration

As the students worked on the activity, I walked around to assess their understanding.  I was pleased that the majority of the students seem to have mastered the skill quickly.  I feel that the hundreds grid helped the students understand what was actually being done as they multiplied a whole number and a decimal.  From our previous discussion of decimals and their value, the hundreds grid connected the multiplication of the decimal and whole number.  The students saw a visual of a whole number (the number of hundred grids) being multiplied by a decimal (the number of pieces shaded in the grid.)
