Reflection: Lesson Planning Being Co-authors (Day 9 of 15) - Section 3: Understanding the Task

 

For this activity, I used one of the short booklets out of “Nonfiction Read & Write Booklets” (Sweeney, A. (2004) Nonfiction read & write booklets: Social studies and science. New York, NY: Scholastic). It is offered on Scholastic’s site as a digital download if you are interested in purchasing it. There are several such texts on their website, however, this activity could be done with any reproducible text.

 

As stated earlier, this was a new lesson and practice for me and I have to say that it is definitely one I will use again next year. The students really enjoyed being “co-authors” and adding what they deemed important to the text. I enjoyed watching them work and more importantly, the exercise served as a perfect formative assessment. It enabled me to see if students could think critically about text features and choose those that were most appropriate for each part of the text.

Objective: SWBAT add appropriate text features to a published book.

Big Idea: After learning about several types of text features, students will add those that are most appropriate to a pre-printed book.
