Reflection: Trust and Respect Laws of Exponents - Section 1: Warm up and Homework Review

 

One mission I have with my students this year is to encourage them to take risks and make hypotheses about new or unknown situations in mathematics.  To me, this is such an important part of the Common Core.  It was also something that was not put at the forefront in our previous standards, so many of my students came to me unwilling to take these chances.  I encourage this through regular practice in warm ups and lessons.  I celebrate all guesses with enthusiasm and complement innovative thinking, regardless of its accuracy.  I also insist that my students treat each other with kindness and respect and I model that behavior as well as humility and lightheartedness when I make errors. 

This warm up is particularly suited to this task.  They have seen exponents before so it isn't entirely foreign and unknown.  Most of them remember enough to at least have a foot in the door.  I was pleased with many of the explanations, even the incorrect ones.  The students who wrote Student Work 1 and Student Work 3 both showed insightful conceptual understanding of multiplying variables.  The student in Student Work 2 showed some insightful thinking as well.  This student obviously didn't remember the rule but took what they knew about parenthesis and extended it to exponents.
