Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Ruby Bridges in Textile - Section 2: Taking a Closer Look

I like using art in my classroom- in fact, a great deal of my master's degree was spent studying ways to use art in the classroom.  I use art frequently, but honestly, today was the first time I'd had students analyze the art- the form, the media, the purpose, the intent, the emotions- all the things that make up art.

I have to say, it was difficult for the students, they only wanted to focus on the surface- the colors and the actual picture.  I really had to help them dig deep into the quilt to see what the artist wanted us to see.

Because of this lesson, I am going to have to find more art for my students to analyze.  It develops higher level thinking skills and because it's "different", they enjoy doing it!!  It's like sneaking vegetables in to your kids dinner- it's good for them and they don't even know it!!
