Reflection: Exit Tickets Introduction to Solving Equations - Section 5: Closure and Ticket to Go


After looking through students’ exit tickets, I noticed that there were some common mistakes in solving and writing equations.  Here some mistakes that students made on problem 2.  The balance showed 21 coins on one side and 3 bags on the other side.

  • Some students said there were 7 coins in each bag, but then created the equation 21 = 7b.  These students have the right idea, but did not create an equation that modeled the three bags on the right side.


  • Other students created an expression 3b, but did not make it an equation.  These students understand what is happening on the balance, but need a refresher on the difference between an expression and equation.


  • Some students created the equation 21 = 7 x 3 without using a variable.  Although this true, I want students to get accustomed to using variables in the equations.


  • Other students used the x to represent multiplication.  I want students to understand that the x is not the best way to represent multiplication with algebra, since it can be confused with a variable.


  • Some students created the expression 21= b+b+b.  This is correct, but I want students to recognize that a more efficient and common way to represent this is 3b. 


I will pass back these tickets to go in the next lesson so students can see and correct mistakes.  I will also talk about the ideas behind these mistakes throughout the unit.

Objective: • Solve one-step algebraic equations that involve addition and multiplication. • Understand that solving an equation as a process of answering the question: which value(s) will make the equation true? • Create an equivalent algebraic expression.

Big Idea: What is going on in the equation 3x + 2 = 17? What does x equal? Students work with the concept of equality and balance to solve one and two-step algebraic equations.
