Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Relationships & Rules - Section 2: Launch & Guided Practice


Originally I planned to combine this lesson and the next lesson (graphing patterns).  Students were very successful with determining the rule for patterns with one operation so I thought I could cover graphing and two step patterns simultaneously.  

I adjusted my plan, mid-lesson, to focus on two step patterns and the strategies used to find the expression. I wanted to use manipulatives with this lesson to helps students experience a pattern as it changes and make connection between the numbers on the table and the tiles.  Using tiles, graphs, and tables became too cumbersome right from the start.  I had to stop and remind myself that students can only learn so many new things in one class.  I now plan to add graphing to this lesson tomorrow.

In the future, I would introduce graphs and manipulatives when reviewing the one operation patterns.  The students were so good at this, and I could have helped grow their understanding by adding manipulatives and showing them how to graph the growth of the pattern.
