Reflection: Standardized Tests (PARCC/Smarter Balanced) Working with Dictionary Definitions - Section 1: Starter

 

When I taught this lesson recently, I was surprised to hear some students say that didn't understand the passage because it was read aloud and they couldn't follow along.  It was an interesting revelation that came on the heels of a directive from our district to work more "listening and summarizing" activities into our curriculum. 

Not only were our native English speakers having trouble with this skill, but our English Language Learners were losing ground here too.

Hearing my students say this made me think about other place I could work in some listen-and-summarize type activities.

Big Idea: Dictionary work does NOT mean scribbling down the shortest definition you can find!
