Reflection: Student Ownership Cesar Chavez - A Man with a Mission - Section 2: Guiding the Learning

In the past I have always taught "my" note taking strategy thinking since I knew it was an effective one for me and many students - it should be that way for everyone. As I became more familiar with Common Core expectations for students I realized that they would need to practice this strategy for a wide variety of subjects and topics. I took the time to watch students and to then assess the effectiveness of my strategy of using the graphic organizer and highlighting text and realized that it was not an effective strategy for many.

I conducted an experiment with a prior lesson and taught the three ways I knew how to take notes (red/blue underlining, Post-It notes and margin notes along with the graphic organizer strategy) I then had students assess the effectiveness of the strategy they chose - had them try another and then assess again. I realized that their written and recollected understanding was so much higher when they took ownership of their learning and used a process that fit their learning style.

This was an application of their notes and effectiveness after the prior lessons and the video attached later shows what they did and how it helped. Such great results on their post scores!
