Reflection: Classroom Setup A is for Apples (and Johnny Appleseed)! - Section 1: Why A?

It is an expectation in my classroom that students work on vowels each and every day.  Vowels are hung up around the room, they are worked on in whole and small group and they are a daily focus for my kindergarteners.  This is part of my classroom climate and my students know that!  With that being said, my students know that A is a vowel and therefore understand that this lesson is a very necessary one for them!

It has taken me a while to figure out what works well for vowels and what does not really work at all.  For me, it is important for students to be explicitly taught what a vowel is- it is the glue in a word (and it is needed).  With the video and the repeated practice in this lesson, students will really grasp onto the idea that A is a vowel and what that means.  I think that this explicit talk is really what helps students understand the letter A, its importance and the sound(s) that it makes.  Tracing pages, puzzles and stories in isolation do not work, so I like to make sure to stick with a lesson like this one for A (and all of my vowels)!
