Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Fantastic Fourteen! - Section 2: Guided/Independent Practice

I have no sink in my classroom, which makes painting a challenge.  Sometimes, like today, I take “the easy way” and skip finger paints or watercolors.  It seems great at the time, but when the lesson is about to be taught, I feel a little “ping” in my stomach.  Guilt maybe?  I’m not sure, but it happened today.

Watercolor painting and finger painting are so close to my heart because I feel like they exemplify how a teacher can take a complex task and present it in a kid-friendly, encouraging way. Sometimes people say Common Core in kindergarten isn’t developmentally appropriate, but activities like painting teen numbers seem to tie the complex concepts to accessible, kid-friendly activities.  Sure, kiddos may be painting a teen number, but they’re having a wonderful time developing a concept and getting messy and happy all at once.
