Reflection: Self-Talk Introduction to Our Island - Section 2: Creation of the Vocabulary List

I enjoyed the exercise of teaching the kids to compile their own lists.  They immersed themselves in the idea and felt success as they created the word wall and used words they picked out JUST because they picked them out.  There seemed to be more enthusiasm.

My recommendation is to use an activity like this with every other literature study.  I feel the benefits outweigh the effort, which can feel substantial at times for both student and teacher, but sometimes routine can take away from effectiveness.  Introducing a traditional vocabulary list has its own merit, and this way the kids won't tire of an otherwise fascinating way to acquire new vocabulary.
