Reflection: Real World Applications Kitten Castle: Exploring Three-Dimensional Shapes and Rolling, Stacking and Sliding - Section 2: Presentation of Lesson

Even though this is a story, the little girl's problem with her kittens helps students see why learning about shapes is important.  They are able to use their knowledge of three-dimensional shapes to solve the little girl's problem.  The students loved this story!  It is a little long, but the students were very engaged.  They wanted the little girl to be able to keep her kittens and had great ideas about what she could do.  The story also sparked some great discussions about three-dimensional shapes and their uses in our lives.  We had a great discussion about why a kitten couldn't have a sphere shaped house because it would roll away (possibly under the dad's feet!), but how a sphere is a great shape for a hamster ball.

Kitten Castle: Exploring Three-Dimensional Shapes and Rolling, Stacking and Sliding

Unit 4: Positions and Shapes
Lesson 4 of 17

Objective: Students will be able to name and describe the attributes of three-dimensional shapes.

Big Idea: Kitten Castle is a fun story about a little girl who uses her knowledge of her kitten's preference to create a home for each one. This story can help students see how knowing the attributes of three-dimensional figures can be applied in a real situation.
