Reflection: Lesson Planning Terrific Twelve! - Section 2: Independent/Guided Practice

Oh, the pokey pin 12s… It seemed like a good idea at the time?  We have actually done “pokey pins” in the past, but I included them as extra activities for fast finishers.  I forgot that when I was coming up with my ideas for activities.  I also really don’t like that, as I mentioned in the lesson, there’s no tying the number to a count sequence or to a quantity.  Then there’s the worst part—some kiddos decided they were “done” with just a few pokes on the 12!  Oh my goodness!  Sometimes, things go this way.  I am reminded that hands-on, multisensory practice must go a little deeper.  I know this.  I just didn’t notice in my effort to “mix things up.”  Next time, pokey pins will be an “extra” activity, and I will have a sequence of numbers for kiddos to poke.  Boy, I could poke myself with a pokey pin after this lesson!
