Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Introducing 3-D Shapes - Section 1: Problem of the Day


Teaching perseverance can be a challenge.  Many students want to give up if a task is difficult, especially if they have made several unsuccessful attempts.  Today's Problem of the Day was similar to yesterday's lesson, but with the shape outline and the pattern blocks that fit together, the students struggled.  The first two students who originally volunteered, quickly gave up when the shapes kept overlapping and they couldn't get it to look like a shape.  We talked about how sometimes a math problem can be challenging, but the more challenging the problem the more exciting it is to solve.  I encourage several students to come up and build off of each other's ideas.  It took more than 5 minutes and a lot of frustrations, but the students finally got it!
