Reflection: Gradual Release Reviewing the Structures - Section 4: Indepdendent Practice


Letting the students go to try and work with on their own can be hard to do.  I don't want them to work through things doing it wrong, or get stuck and just guess.  I like having that control to push and encourage.  However, it is important that they take risks, learn real consequences, and make mistakes.  

This activity worked very well after modeling with the power point.  I was able to demonstrate my thinking and the strategies I used to analyze the text and then they were able to use those same strategies with the activity.  Most students did well, however, I did notice a lot of students confuse the structures of cause and effect with problem solution.  This allowed me to go back and reteach problem solutions, stressing how the author must present a solution in order for it to problem solution. 

This was a great activity to let them work on their own to demonstrate their understanding.
