Reflection: Lesson Planning Utilizing Maps in Nonfiction Text - Section 4: Independent Practice


     In a perfect world, I would have given small groups of students a book that contained maps and I would have created questions around that particular informational text.  As I was planning the lesson, I wanted students to really have to read a map and think as they were answering the questions.  I have a great deal of informational texts in my classroom library.  However, I feel as though I've found a hole in the children's book market when it comes to having appropriate books for first grade reading levels that contain maps and charts.  I was thinking about the progression of this standard when I planned this lesson and I thought about what students would have to do in future years.  Can you imagine your students a few years from now in the 4th or 5th grade?  Do you see them having to read a social studies text that contains maps and having to answer questions?  My students would be able to answer questions such as these where they would have to read a map to answer questions - I simply couldn't find texts at a first grade reading level that would help them to achieve that task.  This is why this lesson contains maps and question sets that aren't connected to a specific text.

     This was the first time my students ever really read a map independently so this was a rigorous activity.  I had the best of intentions to try to close my mouth as much as possible however, some of my students needed a little bit more support.  I tried my best to question students as much as possible but I think I could have still taken a step back and have the students struggle through it a bit more to try and arrive at the answer.  It is still a process for me to learn how much support to offer my students and when to take a step back and let my students really grapple with the material.  Change is hard.  Focusing on where I think my weaknesses are as a teacher will take time to work through.  I am an impatient person and I want to improve quickly (like yesterday). I just need to continue to let my students be challenged without being too frustrated.  Its a fine line that I will have to get better at gauging.
