Reflection: Unit Planning Nonfiction Reading Circles Part 1-One Step Ahead of Hitler - Section 2: Lesson/Independent Reading

When I planned this unit, I knew I would not be able to devote enough class time for every student to be able to read the entire book.  Essentially, I was able to purchase the books through an award grant and wanted to share them with the other two 7th grade teams so at least all 7th grade students had the opportunity to learn as much as possible before the visit.

Our librarian acquired several copies for students to check out for a more complete reading of the text for all students.

In order to divide the book and experiences it in the best way possible, I decided to divide my students into partners and assigning each pair either two or (in a few cases due to numbers) three chapters of the book.

Each pair would read their section and complete both the reading circle sheet and a project for others to view.

The goal is that by the end of the reading though shared discussion and projects, everyone will read a section, but also get a glimpse at the rest of the book through the eyes of their classmates.
