Reflection: Gradual Release Franklin's Bad Day - Section 3: Writing Activity

 

My lesson today is for my students to understand the story enough to write a narrative sentence and draw a picture.  There are many reasons to make our day bad, so we used a circle map to brainstorm all the things that have made our day bad.  Listening skills are important for comprehension, so I made sure to stop on several pages to ask them questions about what words they heard that made Franklin's day bad.  I also pointed out picture details to emphasis story details.  Making connections to what the students know and what you are teaching is also important.  When they can relate to a subject, they can contribute to the discussion and share their experience.  Knowledge produces confidence.  It is with confidence that they are able to complete the task at hand.  The students are asked to write independently.  This task is a great assessment for the skill of writing words phonetically and then the skill of sounding out the letters to read what they wrote.  These skills are two basic CCSS.
