Reflection: Rigor What Do a Cabinet Bed and a Folding Bed Have in Common? - Section 3: Writing About Sarah E. Goode

 

I use different ways to help my students stay on task. One way, as the short video shows, is asking them, "what are you doing?" To which the student replies: I think I'm Writing About Sarah E. Goode. This question allows me to check in with them and witness their progress or lack of. Then, I give support accordingly.

Today, I posed two questions for the students to write about:

  1. How did Sarah E. Goode's invention help people back?
  2. How did Sarah E. Goode's invention help people today?

I gave them questions that made them think. I was looking for them to make the connection about how her cabinet bed is much like our sofa bed of today.

And, for the most part, my students did make this important connection. This can be seen in their writing:

In addition, a couple of students wrote about how useful this invention was for those having to share a small living space:

Also, my students did a good job of providing evidence, though some students fared better than others. Some students gave a great answer to question one and then didn't do as well with question two, or vice versa. The value in posing questions that ask them to probe deeper is to expand their critical thinking muscle. In time and with the right type of feedback, students do improve and get to that point of making connections.

Additionally, I had my students highlighting key words in this lesson. This is new to them, and to know what words to highlight is a sophisticated skill. In fact, a pitfall at this age, even after lots of practice, can be highlighting everything. Plan for it and plan a way to resolve it so that the experience is a positive one. For me, having a continuous conversation about what I expect them to look for as they browsed and asking them about what they were highlighting helped. I didn't make it a big deal if they got highlighted happy. Mastery takes time and much practice.
