Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Polynomial Vocabulary - Section 2: Understanding Vocabulary

 

Whenever possible, I like to have students make meaning of the lesson as opposed to me simply giving them information.  This lesson was build around students looking at the structure of expressions and trying to find patterns.  I have noticed that students often struggle with this type of task and this was no different.  I had to fight the urge to "just tell" students the meaning of the vocabulary words.  Even though students had seen the word degree in a previous lesson, many struggled to make sense of the word given each expression.  Once the class was able to make sense of the word "degree" the words "leading coefficient" and "quadratic" came much easier.  Students were able to use the word degree to make their definition of "leading coefficient" and "quadratic" stronger.  The best part was that because students had thought and analyzed so hard  to determine the definitions and make their own meaning, the guided practice was no problem.  In fact, even a few days after this lesson, students still had a very firm grasp over the vocabulary.

Polynomial Vocabulary

Unit 4: Polynomial Expressions
Lesson 9 of 18

Objective: SWBAT identify the degree and leading coefficient of a polynomial expression and determine if the expression is quadratic.

Big Idea: Students learn best when working collaboratively and examining structure and patterns. Students teach themselves vocabulary terms in this lesson.
