Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge "Snow" Way!! Close Reading with Snowflake Bentley - Section 3: Examining the Text with Text Dependent Questions


When I first planned this lesson, I felt a bit uncomfortable about spending a big chunk of it discussing snow, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that even though I live in Ohio and my students HAVE seen snow, they haven't seen as much snow as Vermont gets.  It is important in cases such as this to at least paint the difference between the two climates as it plays such an important role in the text.

Looking back, I've found it is OK to spend time assessing and building background knowledge because, especially for kiddos like mine, they may never see or experience a sight like 120 inches of snow and I don't want there to be any gaps for them in their understanding of the story.  Besides that, my students were extra engaged after having seen the pictures of such high snow drifts and ultimately that's always the goal!!
