Reflection: Standards Alignment What is a Square? - Section 2: Presentation of Lesson

Common Core Standard K.G.4 says "Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length)"

It refers to the places where two sides meet as vertices/corners.  I start off introducing the term corners, but during this lesson I also introduce the word vertices or vertex as the singular form.  From this point on I continue to use both terms together.  For example, "A square has 4 corners or vertices."  I do this for a few lessons and then start to use the two terms interchangeably.  This can seem difficult for students to begin with, but as they continue to hear the terms, they will also begin to use both.
