Reflection: Transitions Place Value Review - Section 1: Opener

 

Using whiteboards is a common practice in my classroom.  While using individual whiteboards may seem simple, it was definitely something my class had to work at.  Developing a quick routine of getting out the whiteboard and a marker is not as simple as it may sound.  I have my students keep these tools in their desk but sometimes they are unable to locate their tools.  I have had to train my students to organize as well as remember where their marker is kept. 

It is also difficult when beginning to use whiteboards, because the students play with these tools (draw on them).  The expectations while using whiteboards must be established at the start, and be made very clear to students in order to make this a successful practice in the classroom. 

One solution to prevent loss of teaching is that the search for the missing marker is not allowed to go on indefinitely. If students cannot immediately locate their board or their marker, I require that they get a piece of paper out and complete the activity.
