Reflection: Standards Alignment Connecting with Events and Characters - Section 2: Vocabulary Lesson

I made some changes to my vocabulary to better address this Common Core standard:

  • RI.5.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area

I had previously been focusing on teaching word meaning but after reading more on this standard realized I had not given students enough opportunity to discuss the connection of words to the topics we are discussing. When I came upon the idea for word sorts in a younger classroom, I began to get excited about how I could use these in 5th grade.

I have students create their own categories for this lesson so that I can see if they connect meanings of words together. Students offered various sorts from - water/land relationship, to emotions relationship, to even negative relationships.

Two difficulties I saw were students trying to place words evenly into their categories and students would could sort but couldn't think of a title for their groupings.

Lesson 5 of 6

Objective: stories in the same genre on their approaches to similar themes and topics made to characters and events in "How Many Days to America"

Big Idea: Connecting what we know to stories we read helps us to better understand what's happening. The more we share what we have read the more similarities in characters and themes we can find.
