Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Meet The Holidays: The Doctor, The Singer, And Winter Break - Section 1: Chapter 15: Dr. Holiday


So much of what we discover in Bad Boy revolves around Myers' intrinsic motivation to learn.  Even though he fails to complete high school, his self-education serves him well in the long run.

However, as key to the development of his story are the teachers he encounters along his unconventional path, and how they continued to introduce him to great literature and to encourage him to continue writing.  In fact, it is the advice of one high school English teacher--"Never stop writing"-- that comes back to him as a young, disillusioned adult that becomes the catalyst for him fully turning his life over to writing.

Some will argue that an effective teacher plays as little as a 10% role in a student's overall success, attributing the remaining percentage to parenting, nutrition, environment, economics, etc.  I question that percentage, instead believing that an effective teacher, while definitely reaching some students more than others, serves as a guide for all students, giving them leads towards learning that they might otherwise remain unaware of without an effective teacher's knowledge.

So how does this musing serve as a reflection?  I write it from the vantage point of watching at least half of my students raise their hands in each class when I asked "Who would be willing to read on?" when I showed them the lines from A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.  I write from the vantage point of having to practically pry my copy of Ulysses out of at least two of my students' hands at the end of class, as they had already started reading it.  

Will we read James Joyce as 8th-graders this year?  Not likely.  But do my students now know he exists, and that his works are available to him?  They certainly do.
