Reflection: Lesson Planning Rhetorical Analysis Review Day 1: Group Planning - Section 3: Rhetorical Analysis Presentations: Group Planning


Ahh, to teach in a school in Northern Mountains in winter.  We had a two hour delay this morning because of ice (we already had the previous two days cancelled due to snow), therefore reducing the class to around fifty-five minutes (actually less than that, once late buses arrived!).  I was at a bit of a quandary, because I want students to practice their rhetorical analysis skills via these presentations, but I want to hold on to our due date of Thursday for addressing the novel Ready Player One (we only have ten days until a week of finals—this class is year long, but the week hiatus with finals will be disruptive enough if I have anything lingering).  I decided to reduce the standards of evaluation to the ideas and evidence only, because the students will not have time to really consider, and practice, tight organization for a presentation.  Additionally, central ideas and evidence will be most helpful to review for writing their own arguments next week.  As far as the lesson goes, I decided to wait until tomorrow to address the rubric standards so the students could connect with each other and the material enough to be able to divide tasks and work at home on parts of the presentation.  It took a little while for the students to get focused, but once they did, I was pleased that the discussions were more focused on evidence from the text than when we worked on rhetorical analysis a couple months ago.  I gave them some structure because they were struggling with how to translate their discussions to a presentation, telling them to provide an objective summary of the text, an introduction that states the subject, occasion, audience, purpose, speaker, and tone, then explain how the author uses each of ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to their audience.  With this structure in hand, they divided tasks to take home and accomplish so we would be able to stay on schedule tomorrow. 

These kinds of delays sure force us to reflect on what is most important in a learning experience!
