Reflection: Joy Place Value Round Up--Representing Numbers 11-20 with Base Ten Blocks and Ten Frames - Section 2: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment


The students LOVED this activity!  They were helping each other find the animals hidden around the room.  It was fun to see the excitement and the teamwork they demonstrated.  I love these types of activities for reinforcing skills.  Because of the design of the activity, the students do not even realize that they are practicing an important skill.

The activity also gave me the opportunity to observe the students as they worked.  It was fun to see how many of the students really understand the concept of place value by observing whether they said "ten" when counting the rod or the complete ten frame.

When the lesson was all done, one of my students actually said, "Mrs. Baumann, we forgot to do math today!"  What a fun lesson!
