Reflection: Practice One Identifying Claim and Evidence, Day One of Two - Section 2: Biweekly Work Habits and Learning Reflection


Yes, it's true--I am a rebel. Up until last school year, my struggle with learning reflections was epic. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get my students to take it seriously. Why would they chart their assignment scores to see growth? They could look on PowerSchool, our online grading system. Why would they rank their confidence on learning targets? It didn't matter to them. I felt like I was slamming my head into a wall.

So. I stopped. I went against school policy and stopped. You can imagine how that went over.

Eventually, guilt got the better of me (guess I'm not that great of a rebel). I decided to try one, and only one, more time. I created a more holistic reflection tool, hoping that my students would see the value in the questions I provided.

Miraculously, they did. Students began to give me insightful reflections on their learning. I gathered information to help me teach better the next week, and they began to see that they, too, had a role to play. My Poetry class, in which I first rolled out this form, became more engaged, more focused on personal growth. Yes, a few students stubbornly clung to "This is pointless," but far more admitted, only somewhat begrudgingly, that the reflections were helpful! Success!

This year, I'm rolling with the learning reflections from the start. I look forward to reading my students' responses to help me be a better teacher and to help them be better learners.
