Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Columbus ABC's - Section 1: The ABC's

Alpha boxes can be used in multiple ways besides the way I am using here for assessment. This would be an after reading use for the boxes. Alpha boxes can be used as a pre-reading, and during reading graphic organizer too.

As a pre-reading strategy, the boxes can be used as a way of activating prior knowledge. Students can write all they know about a subject trying to think of something that matches each letter of the alphabet.

During reading the graphic organizer can be used to fill in facts as the read. It can also be used as a vocabulary and word collector. Students keep in their book or text book so they can add new words to it.

Columbus ABC's

Unit 7: Columbus: Biography Discovery
Lesson 3 of 3

Objective: SWBAT write facts from our biography on Columbus to demonstrate their understanding of the text.

Big Idea: Why not use the ABC's to help make a test more fun. Instead of giving a multiple choice test students will have to find a fact for every letter of the alphabet.
