Reflection: Lesson Planning Text Mapping Paired Text - Disasters - Part 1 - Section 2: Group Work

Lately, my students have been reminding me of the Roadrunner.  When they read, they seem to be in a race to finish.  They start reading before they've had a chance to previewing any text features before reading.  This is not what I want to see especially since we are moving to more complex tasks with paired text.

To remedy this, I am going to insist that students put on the brakes and see the whole text before reading.  I think text mapping will help.

Text mapping is nothing new.  You can google it and find lots of ways to use it and examples.  I'm using it as a temporary tool to force my students to experience text the way I want them to.  It works for my purposes because I want my students to preview the text, and text mapping requires students to lay text out like a scroll to see the whole piece left to right.  Then, they "map out" the text features before reading and consider questions and unfamiliar vocabulary while reading.
