Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Greedy Gordy at the Restaurant - Comparing Numerals with More - Section 4: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment

 

I thought this lesson would be a little more difficult for the students.  I was actually surprised by how quickly the students appeared to grasp the concept.  I believe this understanding comes from the conceptual understanding of numbers that I have been building with my students through the use of the Common Core Standards. 

The Common Core really pushes me to build a strong foundation for my students instead of rushing through curriculum.  Our extensive work with ordering numbers and comparing quantities really set the students up to be successful with this lesson.  I provided the number line as a tool for the students to use to compare the numbers, but it really wasn't necessary for most students.  They have a firm understanding of this concept.

Big Idea: Previously in this unit, students compared quantities. Now they are challenged to compare numerals to determine which one is greater.
