Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Give Students Choice to Increase Active Engagement with Informational Texts - Section 3: Independent Reading

In creating a culture for learning, it is extremely important to foster joy, intrinsic motivation, and student ownership.  One way I foster theses three qualities is to offer structured choice duirng independent learning activities. In this lesson, I offered structured choice by allowing  students  to "capture their learning" in different ways during independent reading.  This led to automatic differentiation because students decided if they were going to work on root words and derivatives, synonyms for new vocabulary, main ideas and details on post-its, or answering questions to a previously read text. Everyone was successful and engaged.  Both success and engagement lead to joy, motivation, and ownership.
