Reflection: Backwards Planning "Flowers for Algernon" Timed Write - Section 2: Independent Practice


I have taught this story over the last few years and I have done different activities, increasing in rigor, each time. In order to set my students up for success, both in my classroom directly as well as for the upcoming PARCC testing, I started with the outcome in mind. I wanted the students to practice with the textual analysis process in a way that specifically guided them to the writing task at the end of the story. Backwards Design is a very important part of my unit and lesson planning process as it helps me to ensure that each and every activity within a lesson or unit is purposeful and supports students.

Unit 1: Argument Writing

Objective: Students will use their resources to write a standard 5 paragraph essay effectively expressing and defending their position within the 50 minute class period.
