Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Keeping the Fire Burning: Drafting an Opinion Piece - Section 2: Fueling the Fire: Moving Through the Writing Process


I get this question multiple times every year- in fact EVERY time we do a writing assignment with a graphic organizer.  More than one student asks me, "Do I just copy this?"  Clearly I need to have some lessons on transferring one's writing from the graphic to the rough draft.  

In the past what I have found even when giving those lessons is that I STILL get the question!! As I process this further in my mind, I think it goes back to modeling and thinking aloud.  There aren't times when I actually transfer my own writing in front of my students simply due to time and due to the fact that they often copy my ideas as their own.  I think, though, that I'm going to have to spend some time using that think aloud strategy- maybe in an "I do, We do, You do" format to get that point across.  More on that later!!
