Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Characters Learn Lessons in Fairytales - Section 4: Independent Writing


In looking at my students' work, I feel my students scratched the surface of identifying the lesson the character learned. Many of the lessons they identified made sense, but they were superficial ones.

For example:

I feel there are couple of reasons for this. One reason is my students are in the process of becoming proficient readers, and, while they read books at their instructional level, they need more experience with understanding lessons characters learn. Therefore, I will continue to read fairytales and model this process.

Second, sometimes, I overthink, and in looking at the graphic organizer, I would take off the questions:

  1. What message does the author want us to know?
  2. How does the author show us the message?

I feel this confused them unnecessarily and impacted their understanding of the task. Also, I could have asked my students in the beginning to think of a time when they learned a lesson and how they learned it to help them connect to that idea. Connecting ideas to personal/prior experiences is a technique that works well with English Language Learners.

Third, this is the transition into the CCSS and my second graders are experiencing them for the first time. We are going through a learning curve and they are getting used knowing how to locate evidence in their text. Thus, I feel all these components played a part.

Some students identified the lesson but did not provide examples of how the character learned it. It tells me I need to keep exposing them to rich literature. 

I like how focused the students are with their reading. Even though we stress the importance of reading at home, our students do sometimes lack that experience. So I like this shift in the CCSS very much of providing students with much reading time during class time.

Big Idea: Red Riding Hood learns not talk to strangers and Goldilocks learns not go into stranger's houses. What fateful lesson does the Gingerbread learn?
