Reflection: Flexibility Vocabulary: It's Time to Show What You Know! - Section 2: Setting a Purpose


My original plan for this packet was for it first to serve as students’ vocabulary notebook. As we learned about each type of feature, students would cut out an example and glue it into their notebooks. At the end of the unit, with examples already glued in, they then would be assessed on their ability to explain how each was helpful. Well, due to copier issues, this didn’t happen. I wasn’t able to give students their packets until we were a few days into the unit and at that point, I didn’t want to begin it midway through. So I saved the packets for the end of the unit and assessed students on their ability both to find an example of each type and also explain its purpose. Either way would work well to assess students’ skills - one simply gives them less support and requires different levels of thinking.

Objective: SWBAT locate examples of text features and write how each was helpful while reading.

Big Idea: In this lesson, students complete an assessment that measures their ability to locate examples of specific text features, glue each in their packets, and then write how each helped them better understand a text.
