Reflection: Standards Alignment Is Summer Break Necessary? - Section 2: Read "Is Summer Break Necessary?"

This is routine when we read; students put a number at the indent of each paragraph.  I tell them how many paragraphs they should have; if someone does not have the correct number,  we go back and verify the paragraphs.  This is done by me saying the paragraph number (i.e. 1, 2, etc) and the students responding with the first two words of the paragraph.  If someone has incorrectly numbered the paragraph, they can then correct it.

The reasoning behind numbering the paragraphs is that when discussing or referring to textual evidence the students will say, “In paragraph (x),…” and the class can locate the reference.

This is one method to use to encourage use of textual evidence in their reasoning.
