Reflection: Checks for Understanding What Are You Asking About Informational Text? - Section 4: Students Take a Turn

 

It's critical to walk around as students work and let them justify their choices. When they explain why they choose to put a question in one place or another or what they think the answer is, you have a formative assessment. This student explaining his choices could tell why he made a choice, although he needed prompting. I expounded upon those ideas in a later discussion, going beyond the explanation for answering inferential questions by "thinking about it" to answer inferential questions with your background knowledge and what you have learned from the text.
