Reflection: Unit Planning Biography Research: Preview Day! (Day 1 of 11) - Section 1: Welcome to My Lesson

When planning lessons and larger units, like this research unit, I like to start backwards!  I think about what I want my students to accomplish by the end of the unit.  While planning this set of research lessons, I began by looking at the focus standards my district had identified for the six week unit on creative, inventive, and notable people of the turn-of-the-century, and then I created a rubric.  Focus standards are those standards identified as being the most important topics and skills that you want your students to master.  The rubric became my map as I was designing my lessons.  It also became a frequent stopping point for our class to remind us of our unit goals, and is found as the second page in the students' research packets.  (See Resource File:  Biography Research Rubric)
