Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Shadows 4 - Section 1: Prepare the Learner

Turn and talk is a great way to introduce students to the idea of collaborative conversations.  Pairs are safe for kids, especially kids struggling with either the language or the concept.  They don't feel like 'everybody is listening' and are afraid of being wrong.  It is also quick, so it isn't intimidating to the students.  Giving them a manageable amount of time for discourse is as important as the discourse itself!  When kids feel they have to talk to fill the time, the conversation becomes unproductive.
