Reflection: Intervention and Extension Rounding to the Nearest 100,000 - Section 4: Independent Practice


The majority of students were very successful at completing both practice pages:

 Here's an example of my providing an intervention for a student that worked perfectly until he had to round a 9,959 to the nearest thousand! This student kept rounding large numbers and adding in extra digits so I asked him to track the number of digits in the number being rounded to make sure he didn't end up with too many digits. So if he had a 5 digit number, he would round to a 5 digit number. This goes to show that interventions don't always work out as planned, but it was also a teachable moment: Supporting Student. After the video, I asked the student, Does this strategy always work? When does it work? When doesn't it work?

Objective: SWBAT round multi-digit whole numbers to the nearest 100,000.

Big Idea: Being able to understand and explain numbers will help students make sense of multi-digit computation and problem solving.
