Reflection: Intervention and Extension Rounding to the Nearest 1,000 & 10,000 - Section 4: Independent Practice


One of my students was very successful with identifying the benchmark numbers for 4-digit numbers and rounding to the nearest thousand. However, when rounding 5-digit numbers to the nearest thousand, he struggled a bit. To provide an intervention that would help him be successful, I showed him how to overlook the ten thousands place to begin with: Scaffolding Part 1. After modeling this strategy, I monitored the student to make sure he could be successful on his own: Scaffolding Part 2.

Objective: SWBAT round multi-digit whole numbers to the nearest 1,000 and 10,000.

Big Idea: Being able to understand and explain numbers will help students make sense of multi-digit computation and problem solving.
