Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding That's what it's all about! - Section 1: Introduction and Guided Practice

As students told me what they thought the main idea was, I noticed that many told me it was "animal homes". This was the topic, but the main idea was that animal homes are different to meet different needs. I realized that the subtle difference between topic and main idea is one of the things that makes it so hard to teach first graders how to identify the main idea. The lesson made it clear to me that I would have to come up with more lessons for these standards. I will try to find selections whose main idea does not involve any content concepts. In this lesson, an understanding of habitats and adaptations would have helped, but we haven't gotten to that unit in Science yet.
