## Reflection: Intervention and Extension Multiply or Divide? - Section 3: Independent Practice

Fluency goes beyond memorization. To really develop fluency students must have a range of strategies to use when solving problems and must be able to select the most efficient strategy for each problem.

Students require time to practice independently in order to develop fluency. They must have opportunities to practice steps for problem solving on their own to develop fluency and become quicker at solving problems. They must also be given the chance to choose the wrong strategy, reevaluate their step, and select a new strategy. I require students to draw models and show work for each problem so that they can clearly see their steps for solving, and so can I.
